You can replace just the battery yourself using a kit from iFixit, it's less than $100 which is considerably cheaper but it is somewhat tricky because the battery is glued in for that model (in their company tradition of fucking over people who want to fix their own computers as much as possible), so you have to melt the glue with a chemical to remove the battery, but it's doable if you're careful and follow the guide.

You should either get rid of it or replace the battery soon, having a failed battery around in your house is a literal fire hazard. In its current condition, you could easily get at least $500 for it, even more if you were to take out the logic board and the screen and sell both separately (for some reason Macs are more expensive if you buy them in one piece, so taking apart a Mac and selling each of the parts will net you a profit.?) 2. Even if it is, you could probably get at least $200 for it, and if it's not broken, $300-400 isn't unreasonable.

Those are still really valuable, especially if the screen is in decent condition and isn't super visibly cracked or something. The RAM becomes too small after a few years? Yeah you're fucked.Ī few things about your old Mac: 1. If your SSD dies, what then? You can throw it out the window. And about the "band aid" these guys are telling you repairing it would be, think about it, these new M1 machines don't have anything upgradeable. I guarantee you that your computer can do most if not all the things these guys are doing on their brand new laptops.

The other guys here go like "ooh apple made a new computer and are marketing it as if it's a space shuttle! Hmm, my laptop does have a tiny scratch on the back, I think I should upgrade immediately!!". The specs would also be fine for a while too, unless you want to play intensive games on it.

It also should get software support for at least a few more years with the dosdude1 patcher (not to mention that you can install Windows on it and have it keep getting updates 10 years after macOS support has ended). The battery isn't really that expensive if you don't take it straight to Apple. Hope this helps you in making a buying decision. Plus, the only difference between the Air and the Pro is the Pro only has a fan inside of it while the Air is completely fanless, and again it depends mostly on the use case, usually the Pro model is used for Pro tasks like video and photo editing, programming/development and other CPU/RAM intensive tasks.

Repairing an old Mac is a band aid solution, plus it's now 2021 and the average lifespan of a laptop is 2 to 5 years, In my opinion, getting a new machine would be a good idea.Īs for getting a new machine (in case you might think of it or decide to get to) a lot of factors that you must consider, first one is the budget/money where you'll be spending on, and the use cases for the device, since you mentioned that you use it for entertainment purposes and banking, getting the Macbook Air would be a good idea but I suggest getting the 8-core model one because for one, having that extra core means a safe spot for usage and 2, for multitasking purposes (assuming you run a lot of apps).
